What happens during the first consultation?
During the initial consultation, the orthodontist will usually make a diagnosis and explain the various treatment options to the parents. In most cases, X-rays will be necessary before proposing solutions. In order to establish a complete diagnosis, it is necessary to observe both the visible part of the dentition and the part that cannot be seen, i.e. the bone structures and the teeth that have not yet erupted. So don't be surprised if your orthodontist asks you to take an X-ray.
In the rarer cases of particularly complex situations, it is sometimes essential to establish a complete diagnosis right from the start, with casts and photos.
However, most of the time, an orthodontist is able to pinpoint the problem right from the first visit. He or she then suggests appropriate solutions and estimates the duration of treatment. This information enables patients to make an informed decision as to whether they wish to continue with this specialist.
